As a native of Cape Breton, I have visited the Fortress of Louisbourg many times over the years.
While one could not help but be impressed by the magnificence of this national treasure, the largest historical reconstruction in North America, as well as the pervasive sense of history surrounding the Fortress and the Island, it always felt like something was missing.
In June of 2022 I visited Fortress Louisbourg as a Captain in the 78th Fraser Highlanders Ceremonial Regiment of 1757.
The Battle of Louisbourg in 1758 was the baptism of fire for our Regiment, which then went on to distinguish itself yet again at the Battles of Quebec, Montreal, and St. Johns.
Upon my return, I contacted our Regimental Adjutant Lt. Col. Bolton at Headquarters, and at the same time joined the Fortress of Louisbourg Association.
With the support of Brevet Major Nudds, Headquarters, Major Prno, my Officer Commanding of Fort Conestoga Garrison, Thomas Drover Executive Director of Fortress Louisbourg Association, and Eddy Kennedy from Parks Canada, we secured a replica officers uniform and kit of a 78th Fraser Highlander circa 1758, and obtained permission to place it on permanent display.
On June 8, 2023, on the 265th anniversary of the day Brigadier General James Wolfe led the Highlanders and British troops ashore at Kennington Cove near the Fortress, we had the honor of presenting the uniform to the Association and Fortress Louisbourg.
As part of the dedication, the 78th Fraser Highlanders has committed to helping Fortress Louisbourg Association in its ongoing efforts to preserve and promote this unique part of our shared history.
